The concept of a metaverse first appeared in science fiction, and is now starting to be explored by companies and in academia. Virtual reality is an emerging technology that many predict will not only make its way into our everyday lives, but even transform the concept of reality.
But what is it? And what potential future does it hold for the new generation of innovative leaders & creative entrepreneurs?
Generation Z is expected to have a significant impact on the future of VR. They will not only experience the metaverse, but also create the content that shapes it. Their participation will drive its success as they are the most common users among metaverse-related platforms.
According to Brian Caulfield of NVidia, the metaverse is a term for a computer-generated environment. It is an immersive, interactive, fully navigable virtual reality world that you can explore and participate in. The first metaverse was created by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science fiction novel ‘Snow Crash‘. Similarly, Ready Player One is another adaptation of what a virtual environment would look like.
The metaverse is a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet.
By choice of the user it can be a social activity engaging with other people, or an outlet for people to enjoy their VR time alone.
The future of metaverse looks promising; it’s hard to tell what will happen in the near future because there are many companies involved in building these spaces. But it looks like these spaces will grow increasingly more sophisticated over time which will undoubtedly be a boon for users.
The metaverse is the next step in virtual reality. Over the last few years, big tech companies have been investing in this new technology that will make online interactions more immersive and realistic. In a metaverse, there’s no need for a physical avatar. Instead you can choose to inhabit any digital form of your choosing, with accessories & avatar customizations.
Some big companies involved are Facebook, Apple, and NVidia.
Roblox is one of the biggest game developers in the metaverse space. They are currently working on creating an interactive virtual world where players can engage with each other through their avatar.
They have more than 50 million monthly active players and have created their own platform within the metaverse called Roblox Studio.
Facebook after reaching a one trillion dollar market cap valuation, is planning to transition from a social media company to a metaverse company. Mark Zuckerberg announced following Facebook’s quarterly earnings report that they are shifting their focus to more VR experiences.
Facebook has made heavy investments in products like the Oculus Rift. The company is marketing the Rift as a hardware device that can be used for virtual reality gaming, but it’s also a big step forward in Facebook’s plan to dominate all of internet-connected media.
Mark Zuckerberg even appeared on a podcast with Casey Newton from the Verge. Here’s the podcast episode.
Apple has its head in the game too. With its current work on AR (artificial reality) in its capability with Apple’s hardware, it has sights set on incorporating more retail sales through its metaverse experience.
NVidia has been working on an open beta called the NVidia Omniverse. They’ve used the technology for enterprise purposes as well with HP, Epic Games (developers for Fortnite), Dell, & Bentley.
The virtual reality market is about to enter its next phase with the development of new displays that are both brighter and larger than before.
One of the first challenges with virtual reality will be to create an interactive interface that can be used across different applications while remaining easy to understand. This can be a barrier to entry to those without a familiarity in latest technology.
How will platform integrations proceed across hardware if there are current software disputes like with Facebook & Apple? Competition is fierce within this space as big tech giants want a piece of that market share.
Virtual experiences will likely become more immersive with improved visuals, audio, and haptics as well as further integration of the digital world into our everyday lives through wearables like augmented-reality glasses or contact lenses.
Virtual reality is the next frontier in immersive media. As VR headsets become more powerful and affordable, they will likely become a standard household item. Along with this, quality of VR content will improve as graphics, audio and haptics are improved. In addition, more people will be able to experience virtual reality as wearables such as augmented-reality glasses make the digital world more accessible for everyday people.
The metaverse will be an open and shared platform for VR experiences, which we will need to use in order to create activities for our avatars. It could also serve as a new digital playground where people can share their experiences with others and collaborate on projects.
VR is not just for games anymore and it has been used by doctors, surgeons, teachers and other professionals to provide a realistic experience to their learners.
Doctors can use VR for patient training, where they can use virtual reality to simulate what it would be like to perform surgery on a patient. VR is also being used as a rehabilitation tool for stroke patients who are recovering their abilities. Even medical training can be provided with VR.
Virtual Reality provides an immersive experience which makes learning more effective and engaging for students while also allowing them to explore the world with an open mind. There’s even a page on the Roblox website encouraging teachers to use the technological infrastructure to teach students within a Roblox environment. One example would be if
Students could be tasked with making artful designs in Roblox lessons, or partake in coding lessons.
It’ll also be another innovative method to communicate & engage with someone. A lot of people who play video games often make friends with people they meet online. The metaverse can create more meaningful ways to socialize with others.
And think of all the other potential implications a metaverse can bring with virtual reality technology. Things like battle simulations, exercise, space travel, or even exposure therapy for social anxiety.
Mixed reality seems to offer a lot of potential advantages for the future. It will become part of our everyday lives and we’ll be able to interact with others and feel more connected.
Virtual Reality (VR) has many benefits but it should not be treated as an alternative to the real world. It should be used as a supplement to our current realities so that we may better understand other viewpoints and each other.
